Volunteer At A School in Ghana This Summer!

Every year, Threads for Education will be sending a select group of volunteers to Ghana to witness and participate in the work we do first-hand.

Below is the itinerary for the trip.

 

Itinerary:

Day 1- Departure

Arrival at Kotoka International Airport,
staff from Ghana will welcome us
and take us all to our Airbnb. There will be a brief
orientation on the activities for the subsequent days.

Day 2 - Kakum Canopy Walk & The Castles

We’ll pick you up from your hotel and depart from
Accra through the towns, villages and along the
Atlantic Ocean to the capital of the Central Region
Cape Coast and proceed to Kakum National Park for
an exciting canopy walk. The canopy walkway,
suspended 30 meters above the ground connects
seven treetops which provide access and treetop
views of the forest.

After this awesome experience, we’ll proceed to
Hans Cottage for lunch. The waiting time for our
delicious meal will be used to feed and touch
crocodiles especially the oldest among them which is
called Saddam(45years).

After this awesome experience and delicious meal,
we’ll visit the castle for a historic adventure that takes you back to the days of colonization. After touring the
dungeons and taking as many pictures as we can, we
will proceed to Hans Cottage for dinner and retire to
bed.

Day 3 - Kumasi City Tour

After having breakfast, we’ll check out of the hotel
and head to the Ashanti Regional Capital, Kumasi
which is also the seat of the Asantehene, who is the
King of the Ashanti Kingdom. We will visit the
Manhyia Palace, where we’ll learn about the culture
and history of the Ashanti Kingdom. We’ll also have
the chance to see relics and artifacts that date back
to the 18th century.

We’ll proceed to enjoy a delicious local meal at
Joefel’s restaurant popularly known for their local
recipes.

Subsequent to lunch we’ll proceed to Bonwire for a
kente tour. Inspired by the spider, kente weaving is
the main occupation of the youth in Bonwire and are
well known for the production of quality kente
fabric. As a special treat, we’ll also get the chance to
make samples of the adorable cloth after touring the place and being taken through the process of
weaving the fabric.
From here, we’ll proceed to the Golden Gate Hotel for
dinner and overnight.

Days 4 - Arrive at Senase & Semanhyiya American School!!!

After breakfast, we’ll depart to Senase which will
take us 3 hours. Upon arrival, we will proceed straight
to Semahyiya American school and have lunch. We’ll
be introduced to all the staff and kids at the school.
After School either join the bus ride to move around
the village to drop off the kids or walk with those
around, home. We will all be in a family house of ours,
enjoy dinner and overnight.

Days 5-8 - Semanhyiya Volunteer projects

Teams of volunteers will execute a number of teaching and building projects at the Semanhihya American School. At the end of each day, volunteers will walk the students home, offering an opportunity to explore the villages and meet local people.

Day 9 - Departure to Accra

Wake up early morning and enjoy breakfast, after
which we’ll head to Semanhyia American School to
bid the staff and lovely kids farewell and proceed to
Accra.

Day 10: Accra City Tour & Airport Dropoff

We will pick you up from your Airbnb and proceed to
W.E.B Du Bois Center, the memorial place of the
Pan-African American. Linked to the memories of
Pan-Africanism, we will proceed to Independence
Square. Independence Square is where Dr Kwame
Nkrumah, one of the greatest Pan-Africanists proclaimed the freedom of Ghana and connected it to the independence and complete liberation of Africa.
We’ll continue to Kwame Nkrumah Mausoleum.
There, we will pay tribute to Ghana’s first president
and the First Lady of Ghana, Fathia Nkrumah. Lunch
awaits us at Osikan restaurant, well known for their
local recipes.

After lunch, we’ll proceed to the Arts Center, the biggest
arts and crafts centre in Ghana where the collection
depicts the vibrant diversity of Ghanaian culture
through paintings, woodworks, sculptures and other
forms of art that carry messages of the Ghanaian
people. There will be an opportunity to purchase
some souvenirs and we’ll drop you off at the Airport.
